Tours to France. How to get to Chamonix - bus prices and transfer Chamonix ski resort how to get

My story of acquaintance with this small French town began with a night bus full of noisy students. They sang songs, laughed out loud and were clearly in anticipation of an unforgettable holiday. Everyone was wearing hiking boots, many had trekking poles - we went for a walk in the mountains.

Unlike the others, I was a little scared: until that moment I had never been in the mountains and had no idea what was waiting for me. When we crossed a huge tunnel carved right into the rocks, and the panorama of the French Alps opened up before me, my face naturally fell out of surprise. I instantly realized that everything they say about the mountains is true. They fascinate, they beckon, they enchant. They are not forgotten.

Since then, I have realized that I was incredibly lucky: there is no better place for the first trip to the mountains than Chamonix. This is the best mountain resort in France, and possibly the whole world. Everything is concentrated here - huge glaciers, endless alpine meadows, unreal heights, sports and cultural traditions. Whether you are an experienced hiker, avid skier or just a hiker, Chamonix is a great place to spend your holidays.

How to get there

Getting to Chamonix is not as easy as we would like. You will have to use several modes of transport at once. But what can stop the brave mountain lovers!

By plane

The nearest airport is from Chamonix, 80 kilometers away. This is Geneva Airport. Cointrin. Aeroflot and Swiss Airlines fly to it from Moscow. Travel time will be 3 hours 45 minutes. The average price of a ticket that includes a round-trip flight is about 20,000 rubles. You can search for profitable flight options and compare their costs, for example,.

The company's shuttles run from Cointrin to Chamonix. Tickets can be bought directly at the airport at the tourist information center or in advance on the website. An adult one-way ticket costs 33 EUR, and a return ticket costs 55 EUR.

You can also rent a car or order a taxi. It is better to book a car in advance - only the most expensive options may be available at the last moment. You can find a list of taxi services. The cost of a taxi ride from Geneva airport to Chamonix will be approximately 150-170 EUR. If you are bringing ski equipment with you, please let the operator know. In the mountains, everyone is accustomed to this: you will definitely be offered a car with a special trunk for transporting skis.

Theoretically, Chamonix can also be reached from Lyon. Direct flights from Moscow to are operated by Aeroflot. Travel time - 4 hours. But it is located 224 km. from Chamonix. You will have to get there by train. This will take another 4 hours. This will require two transfers. The ticket will cost about 40 EUR. Train timetables can be checked.

In addition, Chamonix can be reached from the airport of the Italian city of Turin. To do this, you will need to overcome 172 km. way. S7 airline flies from Moscow to Moscow. At the airport, you will need to transfer to the Eurolines bus. True, these buses run only on Tuesdays and Thursdays and make only one flight a day - at 18:00. The ticket costs 30 EUR.

And if you are so rich that you have your own plane, you can contact the airport in Annecy, which accepts private flights. Chamonix is 95 km away. from there.

By train

You can get to Chamonix by train from any European city. Timetables can be checked on the SNCF French Railways website. You can even come by train from Moscow to, and then transfer to another train that will take you to Chamonix. The trip from Zlatoglavaya to Paris will take 37 hours and 20 minutes. Tickets cost from 149 EUR. The train runs once a week.

From Chamonix train station, you can easily reach the city center on foot in 10 minutes. If you have booked a hotel in the suburbs, it is worth calling a taxi in advance (do not forget to mention the ski rack!).

By bus

As mentioned above, you can get to Chamonix by bus from Geneva. There is also a direct bus service between Chamonix and Italian Milan. You will need buses from Eurolines or the Italian carrier SAVDA. Buses of both companies arrive at the main station of the city.

From other European cities, you can also get to Chamonix by bus, but you will have to make transfers in the same Geneva or Milan. For example, you can get from Munich, Germany, to Milan by Flixbus (the journey takes 8 hours and costs 25-50 EUR), and then transfer to the SAVDA bus.

In general, when it comes to getting around Europe by bus, everything is limited solely by your imagination. With a strong desire, you can take an Ecolines bus from the Shchelkovsky station in Moscow and arrive in, or, say, Zurich. And from there already get to Chamonix. The Internet will help you.

By car

Chamonix is 2,854 km away. from Moscow. This, you see, is a lot. However, with some preparation, it is possible to overcome this distance by car. To do this, you need to buy international car insurance (green card) and carefully plan your route. Think in advance where you will spend the night and what border crossing you will have to cross. As for the latter, there is always the opportunity to look in advance on the network, where there are fewer cars. There are traffic jams at the border of Europe during the holiday season.

The route to Chamonix from Moscow will run through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Switzerland. Here are a few things you need to consider in this regard:

  • Belarus has bad roads. Get ready for potholes and puddles.
  • in the Czech Republic and Poland paid autobahns. Stock up on small things.
  • There are no speed limits on the roads in Germany. Don't slow down the flow. Porsche and Mercedes drivers of the latest models will be unhappy.
  • Switzerland has a lot of mountain serpentines. You have to drive very, very carefully.

If your trip falls during the winter period, I strongly advise you to stock up on wheel chains. Firstly, it guarantees you some kind of safety on slippery roads. Secondly, in the French Alps, chains are often a mandatory requirement (a special sign will notify you about this). Failure to do so may result in fines.

In general, traveling around Europe by car is an expensive and lengthy undertaking. For each night spent at the hotel, you will pay approximately 50 EUR. Add to this the cost of insurance (about 660 EUR per month), toll roads and, of course, gasoline (about 1.48 EUR per liter).

When is the season. When is the best time to go

It is rather customary for Russian tourists to visit this city in winter rather than in summer. This is due to the fact that skiing for our compatriots has become a more familiar form of recreation than trekking (hiking). But, believe me, Chamonix is no less beautiful in summer! And in autumn and spring, the dazzling beauty of the mountains will not disappoint you.

Chamonix in summer

I first came to Chamonix in the summer. Emerald meadows, fearless mountain roe deer, mirror-smooth expanse of mountain lakes, dazzling contrast between white peaks and greenery of forests... - all this is really mesmerizing. For a long time and slowly enjoy all this beauty - this is real happiness.

There are a lot of people in Chamonix in the summer, but you can only get into the crowd in very popular places. Every morning, tourists disperse through the mountains, where there is plenty of space for everyone. The average summer temperature in the valley is +22°C. It's colder in the mountains.

Chamonix in autumn

In early autumn, Chamonix is still full of tourists. The ski season has not started yet, but lovers of trekking, paragliding, rock climbing, mountain biking and many other activities are still here.

In the middle of autumn, there are fewer tourists. The forest at the foot of the mountains is painted in different colors, and nature seems to freeze. Going to Chamonix during this period is also a great choice. The average temperature in autumn is +14°С.

Chamonix in spring

At the beginning of spring in Chamonix the ski season is still in full swing. In April, French children have Easter holidays, and adults often take a vacation from work to go to the mountains with the whole family. The average air temperature is +14 °С.

Chamonix in winter

In winter, Chamonix becomes the center of skiing. By the way, it was in Chamonix in 1924 that the first Winter Olympic Games were held. Since then, thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the valley in winter. The average temperature at this time is +1°C.

Districts. Where is the best place to live

Chamonix is a small prosperous town that lives mainly on tourism. It is not divided into regions. But the word "Chamonis" means not only a town, but also a commune, which includes 16 villages (villages) and settlements (hameux) in a valley at the foot of the mountains. The vast majority of housing is located in Chamonix, as well as in Les Houches And Argentiere(I stopped right here at the time).

It should be noted that the prices for accommodation in Chamonix are very high. In addition, accommodation must be booked in advance (for example, on). At the last moment, there may simply be no free options left. One way or another, it is not easy to find a hotel room cheaper than 80-100 EUR per day here.

If you are ready for the harsh conditions of the hostel, then you can get by with 25–50 EUR per day (depending on whether you need a bed in a dormitory or in a separate room). In any case, you need to make a reservation at least a few months in advance.

Each village of the valley is a separate resort.

  • Le Tour famous for its ski slopes;
  • Montroc known for old stone houses;
  • Argentiere And Les Chosalets also often chosen for ski holidays;
  • IN Les Gaillands go rock climbers. Also in the immediate vicinity of this village is an incredibly beautiful mountain lake, in which Mont Blanc is reflected;
  • IN Les Bossons there is a ski jump.

Tourists coming to Chamonix, like the locals, often stay in traditional wooden houses - the so-called "chalets". They house hostels, hotels and guest rooms. Thanks to this, the ancient appearance of the villages remains unchanged, despite the annual influx of tourists.

You can explore all possible options and compare accommodation prices.

What are the prices for holidays

Chamonix is an expensive resort. Most of the money you will spend on accommodation and lifts, as well as snacks on the slopes of the mountains.

  • Accommodation - 50-100 EUR per day, but you must book in advance.
  • An average two-course lunch with a drink is 20–25 EUR.

Prices for ski holidays, as well as transport rental can be found below in the relevant sections.

Main attractions. What to see

All the main attractions of the Chamonix Valley are natural. And how could it be otherwise in a place where Mont Blanc rises! Of course, there are museums, monuments and memorable places here. For example, in the city of Chamonix, on the walls of houses you can see frescoes depicting the first climbers. They are like alive! Look out of the windows or go about their usual business.

Or here's another ... in Chamonix there is a sculpture dedicated to the first conquerors of Mont Blanc. They look at the snow-covered mountain and discuss the plan for the future ascent. I also advise you not to stay too long in the city, no matter how nice it may seem. Put on your trekking or ski boots (depending on the season) and set off to conquer new peaks!

Top 5

Mont Blanc

This mountain is the main natural attraction of Chamonix and its unchanging symbol. She is visible from everywhere. She seems to hover over the city, protecting and protecting it from all sorts of adversities. You can admire Mont Blanc up close from one of the neighboring peaks (for example, from Aiguille du Midi). But the most exciting thing is to climb it. Yes, you can climb Mont Blanc. With good physical preparation, this is quite realistic. It is best to turn to professional guides. The hike will take about two days. You will have to pay about 2000 EUR. But the memories and impressions will last for the rest of your life.

Aiguille du Midi

This is a mountain peak with a height of 3842 meters, which can be reached by cable car in just 20 minutes. I think it doesn't even make sense to say that the view from there is amazing. It cannot be described in words. When you are here, contemplating the tops of the Italian, French and Swiss mountains, you feel literally on top of the world. You don't even notice the cold wind and blinding sun. But if you come here in the summer, it's still worth bringing warm jackets and sunglasses.

On the "Midday Peak" (that's what this place is called, if translated from French), there is something to do besides contemplating the heavenly landscapes. There is a panoramic snack bar "3842", an interactive museum of mountaineering, as well as something like a glass booth. When you come here, you get the impression that you are floating above the ground, because both the walls and the floor of this “booth” are absolutely transparent. An unforgettable experience. This attraction is called Le Pas dans le vide (“Step into the Void”).

Adult lift ticket one way - 48.50. Round trip ticket - 58.5 EUR. Family ticket - 175.50 EUR (two adults + two children). The entrance to the lift closes early enough, so arrive early. Below you will find detailed opening hours:

  • From 29/08 to 25/09 from 8:10 to 16:30;
  • From 26/09 to 01/11 from 8:10 to 15:30;
  • From 17/12 to 26/03 from 8:10 to 16:30;
  • From 27/03 to 24/05 from 8:10 to 17:00;
  • From 25/05 to 31/05 from 8:10 to 17:30.

Important: the schedule may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and time of year. The sun almost always shines at the top, but gusts of strong wind can interfere with your plans.

Glacier Mer de Glace (Montenvers)

Imagine a cosmic-sized snow "tongue" that slowly crawls along the gorge at a speed of 1 cm per year. Its length is 7 kilometers. Width - 200 meters. This is the same glacier. In French it is called "Ice Sea". Tourists are brought along the old cogwheel mountain railway, built already in 1908. The road itself is the pride and attraction of the valley.

About the tour of the grotto must be said separately. This is an artificially carved niche leading to the center of the glacier. The walls of the grotto are illuminated in different colors, which creates the feeling of a real winter fairy tale. In addition, various exhibits related to the life of the Alpine mountaineers in the 19th century (sledges, skis, various utensils) are exhibited here. The place is really unique. To keep the caves in a safe condition, local engineers are constantly correcting something. After all, the glacier is moving, and with it the shape of the tunnel is changing.

Important information: to get here, you have to climb a staircase of 300 steps. Calculate your strength.

An adult train ticket to the glacier costs 30.50 EUR (return trip included). Child - 25.90 EUR. Family - 91.50 EUR.

The first train from Chamonix to the glacier and cave usually leaves between 8:00 and 9:00 am. Then trains run every twenty to thirty minutes. The last trains back to Chamonix leave between 16:00 and 18:00 depending on the season. The glacier is open to the public almost all year round. You can see the detailed schedule.

Glacier d'Argentière

The Argentiere glacier is less known than the Mer de Glace, but it is no less amazing. This whopper of the word breaks out of the depths of the mountains, devouring all living things in its path. One look at it is enough to understand how nature is stronger than man.

To get to the glacier in the summer, come to the neighboring village of Chamonix Argentère. Here change to the Lognan lift (1972 m) or Les Grands Montets (3300 m). You have to walk from the lift to the main viewpoint. You can do it in half an hour. The price of an adult return ticket for the ski lifts ranges from 17.50 to 35.50 EUR.

In winter, you can ski down to the glacier.

Lake Cornu, Lake Brevent and the Black Lakes

Mountain lakes are another attraction of the Alps and a natural wonder that will make you gasp. There are many of them in the Chamonix Valley, but the most famous is, perhaps, Lake Cornu. Mountains and sky are reflected in its frozen surface. Its majestic immobility and the silence reigning around suggest thoughts of eternity.

You can also get here in winter on cross-country skis, but the lake is likely to be covered with snow. Therefore, it is better to plan a visit for the summer. To get here, in the town of Chamonix take the Planpraz lift (1999 m.) and then change to the lift to Brévent (2525 m.). Here, by the way, you can have a bite to eat in the cafe. Then you have to go on foot and for quite a long time (but this is the point of a mountain holiday in the summer, right?). The way to Lake Cornu will be 1 hour 45 minutes, to the Black Lakes - 2 hours 30 minutes.

The cost of going up and down from the city to Brévent will be 31.50 EUR per adult and 27.80 EUR per child.

If you are too lazy to go so far, then right at the ski lift there is another beautiful lake with emerald water, which is called Lake Brevan. Here, in a small wooden house, there is a cafe.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

You will not find impressive temples in the Chamonix valley. But there are a lot of small parish churches that convey all the rustic charm of the alpine area. For example, church of saint michael in the city of Chamonix. According to ancient documents, the first temple on this site was rebuilt in the 12th century. Then it burned down in a fire and was restored only six centuries later. The decoration of the church is quite modest - a few old paintings, small statues and a simple altar. Despite this, the church is very loved by the locals.

Museums. Which are worth a visit

Frankly, any museums of the valley pale in comparison with the beauty of the mountains. But if you have a “museum” mood or fog and rain in the mountains, then Chamonix can offer you a couple of interesting places.

Alpine Museum (Musée Alpin)

This museum reflects the history of the Chamonix Valley. Ancient household items, lithographs, engravings, maps, photographs, mountain equipment of the last century - having been here, you will understand how difficult and long the mountains were conquered by man.

The museum is located in the center of the town of Chamonix at 89 Avenue Michel Croz, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. It is open daily in the summer from 14:00 to 19:00, and in the morning from 10:00 to 12:00 - during school holidays in France. Entrance for adults - 5.50 EUR (with a guest card - 4.30), for children under 12 years old (when visiting with family) - free of charge, from 12 to 18 years old - 1.50 EUR.

Crystal Museum (Musee des Cristaux, Espace Tairraz)

Here are collected all the unusual and precious stones that have ever been found in the valley. They shimmer under skillfully placed lighting and really make an impression. After all, when you think about how many years nature has been creating these riches extracted from the bowels of the earth, you really understand their value.

Under the same roof with a collection of stones, there is a permanent exhibition telling the history of mountaineering. This is an interactive space where, with the help of a special simulator, you can feel like a climber who has just conquered a mountain peak.

The museum is located at 615 Allée Recteur Payot, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Admission for adults - 5.90 EUR. Children and teenagers under 18 are admitted free of charge, provided they are accompanied by an adult. Upon presentation of a guest card from the hotel, you will be given a discount on a ticket of 1.40 EUR.

The museum is open from 01.09 to 31.12 every day from 14:00 to 18:00. Closed from 14 to 26 November and 25 December.

tourist streets

During the day, life in the Chamonix valley is seething at the ski lifts, and in the evening - in the center of the town itself. Although the latter cannot boast of large size, tourists flock here in search of entertainment after a hard day in the mountains. The main attractions, museums and shops are located in the heart of Chamonix.

What to see in 1 day

Unfortunately, if you come to Chamonix for only one day, you will not be able to see many sights. Ski lifts in the mountains close early even in summer. So get up early, choose your favorite lift (Aiguille du Midi, Cornu Lake, Argentière Glacier) and enjoy the mountain scenery. In the evening, go down to the valley for a glass or two of something intoxicating in one of the cozy log bars.

What to see in the surroundings

There are many interesting things to do in the vicinity of Chamonix. These are natural attractions, and fabulous villages and elegant cities. Here are a few places that are easy to get to.

Emosson Reservoir (VerticAlp Emosson)

This is the second largest reservoir in Switzerland. It is truly huge: when you look at it from afar, you don’t understand what kind of force, in principle, can hold such an amount of water. However, here it is, the dam, in front of you. And you can even walk along its border.

To climb to the Emosson reservoir, located at an altitude of 1965 meters, you will need to drive 19 kilometers from the city of Chamonix. Take the Mont Blanc Express train at Chamonix train station (in the direction of the station martigny) and get off at the stop Chatelard. If you are in a car, drive through Col de Montets, Vallorcine and cross the Swiss border.

IN Chatelard the lift will be waiting for you. Having climbed the mountain, transfer to a small panoramic train, from the window of which you can observe the enchanting landscapes of mountains and forests. The train will take you to another lift (Mini Funic), which will take you up to the reservoir in a matter of minutes. By the way, there is even a cafe here.

Emosson Reservoir is open to tourists from May 21 to October 23. A detailed schedule of lifts and trains can be found. An adult one-way ticket to the very top will cost 27 EUR. Both ways - 36 EUR. Children under 16 years old tickets will cost 14 and 18 EUR, respectively.

Courmayeur

This is almost the most famous mountain resort in Italy. You can come here if you have already explored all the ski lifts in Chamonix and you want new experiences. By the way, in addition to the magnificent mountain slopes, Courmayeur has the highest mountain botanical garden in Europe ( Giardino Botanico Alpino Saussurea). The garden is open from June to September from 9:00 to 17:00. The entrance ticket costs 3 EUR (2 EUR for children under 15 and pensioners over 60).

Courmayeur itself is 21 km away. from Chamonix. You can get here from Chamonix by car or by bus. You can see the bus schedule. Please note that the road will run through the tunnel under Mont Blanc, whose length is neither more nor less than 11 km. If you are by car, you will have to pay 55.20 EUR for a round trip.

Annecy

This is the center of the French department of Haute-Savoie and just a nice town at the foot of the mountains. It is located approximately 100 km. from Chamonix. The French love it very much and no matter how they call it - “French Venice”, “Pearl of the French Alps”, etc. in Annecy you will enjoy even a simple walk around the city - there is a large lake, an ancient castle and a lot of picturesque streets.

Food. What to try

In Chamonix it is worth joining the Savoyard cuisine. This is a simple and hearty meal of mountain shepherds. The main thing in Savoyard cuisine is cheese. It was in the Alps that the most famous cheese dishes of European cuisine were invented: fondue, raclette and tartiflet. Almost everyone knows what fondue is - melted cheese, into which slices of bread are dipped. Raclette is also melted cheese! They only melt it on a special unit called "raclet". Usually these are several heating surfaces. For example, stone for meat and Teflon for mushrooms and cheese.

The main component of the tartiflet is… I know you guessed it. Cheese. In addition to cheese, this includes potatoes, bacon and onions. All this is baked in layers in the oven and it turns out another hearty Savoyard dish.

Such an excessive love for the cheese of the inhabitants of the Alps is due to the fact that this hearty product can be stored for a long time. Previously, when it was difficult to find food in the mountains in winter, only the cheese stored in advance helped out the brave mountaineers.

For dessert, try the blueberry tart Tarte aux Myrtilles), whose taste will remind you of walking in a mountain forest.

Savoy cuisine can be tasted at the restaurant La Caleche, which is located in the heart of the town of Chamonix. On three floors of the institution there is a warm atmosphere of gatherings in a large friendly company. In the basement of the establishment, whole racks of cheese are lined up, waiting to be melted in a fondue maker. This place was founded already in 1946 and still carefully preserves not only the gastronomic traditions of the region, but also material evidence of its rich history. On the walls of the restaurant are skis and bobsleighs from the first Winter Olympics in 1924. If you read French, there are books on the subject as well.

The average check is 20–25 EUR. The place is very popular, so it is better to book a table in advance. Restaurant address: 18 Rue du Dr Paccard, Chamonix.

Budget

There are plenty of cheap places in Chamonix where an ever-hungry skier or mountain trail explorer can kill a worm. Here are some examples:

  • Elevation 1904- here you can order both a burgette and a tartiflet. You can eat both outdoors and indoors. In general, fast, tasty, inexpensive, varied and noisy. Many tourists go here for breakfast. The cafe is located in the heart of Chamonix city at 259 av Michael Croz Chamonix Sud.
  • Poco Loco Chamonix It's both a brewery and a diner. So it's always fun here! And delicious, by the way, too. The food is inexpensive, but the assortment is quite simple - mainly burgers and fries.
  • Place Hibou Deli stands out from others. They love healthy, low-calorie food. There are Arabic, Asian and European dishes. This establishment is suitable for anyone who is tired of heavy Savoyard food. It is located at 416 rue Joseph Vallot, Chamonix.

Intermediate level

  • Chez Constant- modest interior, small hall... But the quality of the dishes will pleasantly surprise you. It's always delicious here. The restaurant values its reputation very much, it is often recommended to tourists and, believe me, not in vain. It is worth trying, of course, Savoyard dishes.
  • La Tablee-another nice place where you can taste Savoyard cuisine.
  • Le Munchie Chamonix- one of the most fashionable and popular restaurants in the valley. Lovers of modern cuisine with an Asian touch will love it here. On the walls are exhibitions of contemporary artists. Be sure to try the duck with teriyaki sauce here.

Expensive

  • Le Panier des 4 saisons- the most famous gourmet restaurant in Chamonix. As the name suggests, they try to cook with seasonal products. Excellent wine list. The interior may seem rustic - wooden walls, subdued lights, no gold. But this is how the inhabitants of the Chamonix Valley see comfort.
  • Restaurant owners La Cabane des Praz also did not deviate from traditions and welcome guests in a spacious wooden house made of log cabins. The menu is very diverse: there are oysters, and snails, and lamb, and foie gras... In a word, everything to please the taste of a true gourmet.
  • Restaurant L'Impossible- favorite Italian cuisine in the most refined performance! They cook here exclusively from the freshest bio-products. Suitable for vegetarians. Located at Adresse: Route des Pélerins, Chamonix.

Holidays

Christmas

Many go to Chamonix for this particular Catholic holiday. Chamonix in winter is a fabulous place. It does not need artificial Christmas decorations. Wooden huts, whose roofs are decorated with snow caps, are part of the image of Chamonix by definition. The most breathtaking sights are created here by nature itself - these are snow-capped mountain peaks, fiery sunsets and slopes shining in the sun.

During the period of the Christmas Fair (from 16.12 to 30.12), in the midst of all this splendor, locals and tourists meet Santa Claus (St. Nicholas), organize processions, drink mulled wine, sing songs and just enjoy life.

Feast of the Guides (fête des Guides)

This is the most important festival of the valley. It was first held in August 1924. Tourists may not understand the importance of this event, so I will explain everything briefly. Guides, they are also mountain guides, from time immemorial have been the most important people in the valley. With fearlessness and zeal, they paved the way for others to the mountain peaks.

To this day, all Chamonix guides stick to each other and their traditions. The Holiday of the Guides is the day when the locals praise the skill of the conquerors of the mountains, and the guides themselves put on a uniform, go outside and willingly communicate both with each other and with everyone.

Safety. What to watch out for

You should not be afraid of scammers and thieves in the valley. The main rule of safety is to be careful in the mountains. If you are going to Chamonix to ski, choose slopes that you can really handle, and before each dangerous descent, check that your skis are well fastened and that your boots are not loose. Helmet and goggles required.

If your trip is planned in the summer, think about the equipment. For long walks in the mountains, trekking boots with thick soles and special sticks are required. Otherwise, you risk twisting your leg on the first cobblestone. When I first arrived in Chamonix, I did not have sticks, and I had to look for suitable ones in the forest. But I quickly realized that nothing can replace professional trekking poles.

Also be sure to bring sunscreen and some kind of hat. Remember, warm jackets and sweaters come in handy too. After all, it is always winter above 3000 meters.

Another important point: the French are incredibly reverent about the nature of their country. In the French Alps, everything is strictly regulated. For example, you cannot build a fire anywhere, put up a tent or walk the dog. In many places there are even signs forbidding picking flowers. Stick to these rules whenever possible. Of course, it is unlikely that someone will catch you by the hand if you decide to pick a dandelion in a mountain forest. But for a tent set up in the wrong place, they can be taken to the police station.

Also be careful with mountain animals. There is nothing terrible in the alpine forests, but even mountain roe deer or badgers should not be provoked.

Things to do

If walking in the mountains (with or without skis) seems too boring or tiring for you, in Chamonix you can always figure out how to diversify your vacation. First, the valley provides endless opportunities for extreme sports. But if you are not an extreme at heart, there are safer options. In winter, you can try snowshoeing or dog sledding. In the summer - horseback riding.

Shopping and shops

If you are a shopaholic and even in the mountains you cannot do without shopping, then in Chamonix I advise you to pay attention to shops with local products (for example, the Boucherie du Mont Blanc butcher shop at 156, rue Paccard) and equipment sales points (there are at almost every step).

You can buy a regular grocery set for cooking at the Super U supermarket at 117, rue Vallot. Open from Mon. on Sat. 8:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sun. from 7:30 to 12:00.

Bars. Where to go

The bars of the valley are the holy of holies. On winter evenings, mountain sports enthusiasts gather here for “apres-ski”, that is, gatherings “after skiing”.

  • Barberousse Chamonix Be sure to check out this bar. Its interior resembles a pirate ship. There is a great selection of rums here. If there is not enough money for rum, then you can get by with a glass of beer for only 2 EUR. Address: 17 place Jacques Balmat. Open every day from 18:00 to 02:00.
  • A good bar is located in the building of the hotel Pointe Isabelle at 165 avenue Michel Croz. The interior is designed in modern style. Good selection of cocktails. There is something to eat. Open every day in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening.
  • Savoy Bar Argentiere- the place to go for a relaxed atmosphere of a friendly village booze. Address: 109 rue Charlet Straton, Argentiere. Open every day from 15:00 to 02:00. Prices are very democratic.
  • Les Caves du Pele- a bar that lovers of live music should go to. Jazz and blues are played here in the evenings. DJs perform late into the night. Location address: 80, rue des Moulins.

By the way, there is also a wine bar in Argentiere. It is located at 214, rue Charlet Straton, Argentere and is called " 214 ".

Clubs and nightlife

  • Amnesia Club Chamonix- lovers of dancing here the most expensive. It is open every day except Monday from 24:00 to 06:00. Often famous DJs come here. The lounge area can be booked for private parties.
  • Bunker- an institution for those who love the exotic. The goal of the creators of the club is to take you to the atmosphere of the Soviet Union in the 1970s. Gas masks, empty black caviar cans, walls covered in unreadable Cyrillic words, portraits of Lenin... In short, a dump of stereotypes about Soviet Russia. Music, however, is played here quite modern and come off to the fullest. Open from Mon. on Thu. from 01:00 to 06:00. On Fri. and Sat. from 12:30 to 06:00.

extreme sports

Chamonix is a paradise for lovers of quiet walks, as well as for avid thrill-seekers. Both in summer and in winter, you can find entertainment to your liking here. In summer it is trekking, mountain biking (mountain biking), paragliding, rock climbing, mountaineering (primarily climbing Mont Blanc), cycling, trail running (running through the forest), canyoning ... Agree, the list is impressive. Whatever you choose, in Chamonix you will find instructors who will give you good advice on equipment and the route.

The list of extreme winter activities in Chamonix is no less impressive: skiing, freeride (off-piste skiing), snowboarding, ski mountaineering (ascent and sport that combines skiing and paragliding).

For many of the above sports, Chamonix even hosts local competitions or stages of various cups and championships. So, next year the stage of the international freeride championship will be held in the valley. Every year, the Mont Blanc Marathon is held, in which thousands of runners take part.

If you don't know where to start, contact the Tourist Information Office. They will suggest a guide or a company that will help you find your way. There are dozens of ski schools alone here, and each of them has its own specialization.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

From Chamonix I advise you to bring cheeses. Prices are reasonable, especially considering how expensive good cheese is now in Russia. Just choose not too odorous, otherwise the smell will haunt you all the way home. Otherwise, the choice is not great - the same magnets and T-shirts as everywhere else.

Personally, I bought myself a plush marmot (this is one of the most common animals in the valley), which makes characteristic sounds when you press its belly. Why not a great gift? You can also take a closer look at souvenir bells, whose second purpose is to hang on the neck of mountain sheep.

How to move around the city

The Chamonix Valley is traveled on foot, by car, bus or bicycle. It is difficult to get lost - the villages are located in an even formation along the foot of the mountains.

Taxi. What features exist

There are about ten taxi services operating in the valley. It is better to call there in advance. Here are a few companies: Alp Taxi Laurent, Taxi Michel Buton, Taxi Servoz. Prices are quite high. So, a trip from Chamonix to Argentiere will cost 18 EUR, although the distance between the two points is only 10 km.

Buses

Buses in Chamonix connect local villages, as well as places where ski lifts and starting points of walking routes are located. Free buses run around the city of Chamonix in both winter and summer "Le Mulet". All other buses depart in the main town of the valley from the Chamonix Sud stop. Waiting time usually does not exceed 30 minutes. If you have a Guest Card, which you should be given at the hotel, the fare will either be very cheap or even free.

In total, eighteen routes run through the valley. Lines 1 and 2 leave from Chamonix Sud, make a small circle around the city and then pass 4 main villages - Les Houches, Servoz, Argentiere and Vallorcine. The schedule of other buses can be found

From December to March, a night bus runs through the valley. The ticket costs 2 EUR. The schedule can be viewed.

Transport rental

The easiest way to rent a car for trips around Chamonix is through the well-known services Alamo, Hertz, Europcar and others. You can compare prices and choose the most advantageous option, for example. To rent, you will need an international driver's license and a bank card. You must be at least 21 years old and have at least 1 year of driving experience. The approximate cost of renting a decent car is 50 EUR/day.

You have to be very careful when driving in Chamonix. As I said, in winter you need chains on the wheels. In summer, you should also be very careful and in no case exceed the speed limit. One wrong turn of the steering wheel in mountainous terrain, unfortunately, can cost you dearly. Yes, you know everything.

Chamonix - holidays with children

The French are happy to go to the mountains with children. French peanuts get up on skis as soon as they have learned to walk. I remember very well this feeling of shame and humiliation when I was just learning how to brake on a slope with a “plough”, and kids in helmets, barely reaching my knees, were rushing past me.

Often mothers and fathers, coming to a mountain resort with children for the very first time, send them to a special ski school. Once I was lucky enough to watch lessons in such a school right from the window of my room. Toddlers of three or four years old went skiing in single file behind a huge shaggy dog of the Sennenhund breed. The sight was touching.

If your children don't mind, you can follow the example of French parents. Finding a Russian-speaking instructor in Chamonix, including for children, is not a problem.

If the child is still too small for extreme sports, there is nothing left but to take him with you. For babies shorter than about 105 cm and weighing up to 15 kg. there are special hiking backpacks. You put a child in it, tighten the belt around your waist and forward - to conquer the peaks on foot or on skis.

For newborn toddlers, a sling or ergo backpack will do. But keep in mind: children under three years old are not allowed to a height of more than 3000 meters (for example, on the same Aiguille du Midi). Children under 5 years of age are simply not recommended to climb. I think it's prejudice, but those are the rules.

Older kids, I'm sure, will be happy to climb above the clouds with you or take a walk along one of the easy hiking trails. Traveling to the ice caves of the Mer de Glace glacier will also give them considerable pleasure.

In addition, Chamonix has a nature reserve Parc Animalier de Merlet - Les Houches where animals can be observed in their natural habitat. Such a zoo without cages and bars. It is located at an altitude of 1563 m. It is open from April 30 to September 30 from 9.30 to 19.30 in July and August and from 10.00 to 18.00 in May, June and September. Adult ticket - 7 EUR, children - 4 EUR. The place can only be reached by car. To do this, go to the pan-European route N205 / E25 and exit at Les Houches-Chef-Lieu. Then follow the signs for Le Coupeau. You will need parking number 4.

Ski holidays

Here we are getting to the most interesting. Chamonix is the most famous ski resort in France. Winter holidays here are unforgettable. At your disposal 157 km. ski slopes of all difficulty levels. All of them are located at an altitude of more than 2000 meters.

Ski passes

There is a whole system of ski passes in the valley. Dearest, Mon Blanc Unlimited gives access to all ski areas of the valley and even Courmayeur (Brevent-Flégère, Grands Montets, Balme Tour Vallorcine, Aiguille du Midi, Les Houches, Courmayeur). It costs 62 EUR for one day of skiing. There are discounts for children, families and senior citizens.

Chamonix Le Pass will open access to all ski areas of Chamonix with the exception of Grand Monte. It costs 45 EUR per day.

There are separate ski passes for Les Houches, Brevent Flégère and others. They cost around 30 EUR per day. You can read more about ski passes.

Tracks

For beginners, it is best to stay at Les Houches. There are many blue lines here. There are also several green ones - very, very light.

More difficult pistes can be found in the Brevent and Flegère areas. They are interconnected by a cab lift. You can get here by funicular from Chamonix or Argentiere.

Other ski areas in Chamonix are Le Tour - Vallorcine - Col de Balmes and Le Grand Morte. The latter is the largest and most popular in the valley, despite the difficulty of the trails. If you are here, do not miss the opportunity to ski down from a height of 3300 meters all the way to Argentière.

Ski resorts in France
Chamonix.

Chamonix: about the resort

Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in Europe and France. It was here that the first Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924. Chamonix is one of the best resorts for freeriders and confident skiers, suitable for lovers of different slopes, this resort is recommended for connoisseurs of apres-ski and historical resorts. Beginners will not feel very comfortable in Chamonix - the ski area for beginners is small and located below, near the resort, where the snow is not in the best condition.

Official website of the resort: www.chamonix.com
Chamonix piste maps: http://www.chamonix.com/plans,14,fr.html
Website in Russian: http://chamonix-montblanc.ru

Recommended: confident skiers, freeriders, non-skiers, lovers of luxury accommodation and apres-ski, tourists who want to combine excursions and skiing.
Not recommended: for beginners, those who are looking for a large connected ski area and the opportunity to ride "to the door".

Pros:
- One of the oldest and most beautiful resorts in the Alps.
- A variety of interesting landscapes.
- Moderate prices for accommodation.
- Lots of entertainment for non-skating.
- Excellent opportunities for freeride and expert riding.
- Good opportunities for excursions.

Minuses:
- There is no single (for the entire valley) system of lifts.
- Old ski lifts in many ski areas, queues are possible.
- Heavy traffic.
- Expensive ski passes.
- Skiing down to the hotel/apartment is almost impossible.
- The trails leading to the resort are usually not in the best condition.

The highest point of the ski area: 3275 m (Grand Monte)

Ice Skating: The White Valley (Vallee Blanche), which starts below the top of the Aiguille du Midi lift, is the best route for freeriding. There are no prepared tracks in this sector. Guided ride recommended.

Chamonix is beautiful at any time of the day, but the evening city at Christmas and New Year's time is most striking. Chamonix welcomes guests with a myriad of lights, clean air and an indescribable smell of holiday anticipation.

This city is so old, comfortable and cozy. However, what else can you expect from a ski resort with a 200-year history!

Chamonix is surrounded by mountains from all sides - it is difficult to find a place where one of the peaks would not be visible. The most majestic view opens from a height of 3842 meters from the Aiguille de Midi, where you can climb in 20 minutes by cable car (one of the highest in Europe). It is striking not only the panorama of mountains, the valley, the glacier that has opened up, but also how people could build such a monumental structure at such a great height. And, of course, Chamonix is Mont Blanc: the highest mountain in Western Europe is visible from different points of the valley, and especially well - from the slopes above the resort.

Skiing in Chamonix

Unlike many French resorts, Chamonix does not have a large combined ski area, a significant part of the slopes (there are 155 km of them in Chamonix) are in the Brevent / Flegere, Le Tour and Grands Montets areas. The first skiing area, which unites Brevent and neighboring Flegere, is located directly above the city, here you can find a sufficient number of comfortable slopes for intermediate and confident skiers.

Le Brevent/La Fregele (1095-2525 m)
One of the most beautiful places in the Chamonix valley is Le Brevent, a peak located on the south side of the valley directly opposite Mont Blanc. This is one of the most popular ski areas among our tourists. It should be borne in mind that from the top point of the lift (cabin), from the mark of 2525 meters, only black tracks lead. The rest of the ski area is good for intermediate skiers. Le Brevent is also famous for off-piste skiing and is quite popular with snowboarders. However, Chamonix can only be a stretch to call a resort well suited for snowboarding (if you exclude freeride) - the abundance of narrow trails that look like roads does not please the "boarders" too much. Beginners are advised to master the first turns on the training track in the resort itself or go to the neighboring ski areas, where there are many green slopes.

Easy and comfortable trails for beginners are located in different parts of the valley. These are Volmaire, le Chosalets, les Planards, les Pelerins, le Savoy.

Chamonix is also a huge choice of apres-ski entertainment. The resort has long been famous for its coffee shops and delicious pastries. The city has 14 bars, 80 restaurants, more than a hundred shops, 7 discos, cinemas and even a casino. It is good to come to Chamonix with the whole family, even if 1-2 people ride - there will be entertainment for everyone. Like most French resorts, Chamonix has dedicated kids clubs for all ages.

The Le Tour area is a good place for beginners and advanced, and snowboarders will also like it. And for those who are looking for thrills, it is better to go to the Grand Montets - this is where the world-famous area is located, very popular among freeriders. Perhaps, only Belaya Dolina, a famous glacier zone with a 20-kilometer freeride route, can boast of a greater attraction for experienced skiers. For the sake of unrealistic, bewitching impressions from traveling through the Vallee Blanche, it is worth coming to Chamonix at least once.

White Valley (Vallee Blanche)
Having climbed the Aiguille de Midi and admired the beautiful views, experienced skiers go down the White Valley. This is a 22 km glacier descent, with no limits or markings.

Photo: Andrey Kamenev

You can go down the main route in the White Valley on your own in good weather, and if you follow the tracks, the risk is quite small. But you should keep in mind that this is a glacier, many cracks are covered with snow, and several deaths occur annually on off-piste routes in the White Valley. To pass along the ridge from the upper station of the cable car to the beginning of the descent, you will need crampons, it is better to fasten your skis to your backpack. But to see the most beautiful places in the White Valley, it is highly recommended to hire a guide.

Lognan / Les Grands Montets
One of the most famous ski areas in France is located to the west of the city at altitudes from 1230 to 3233 meters. This area attracts primarily lovers of freeride and off-piste skiing: there are not many areas in Europe that combine such spaciousness, excellent snow quality with a variety of terrain and a vertical drop of 2100 meters. You can get to Grand Monte from Chamonix by bus (they are often crowded in the morning), car or taxi.

Le Tour/Vallorcine (1480-2230 m)- an almost ideal place for families and beginners - there are many blue and green slopes. A very picturesque and moderately long blue trail leads from Vallorcina, laid in a pine forest. There are few really steep and truly trails in this area.

Helpful information
If your arrival is scheduled for the weekend, it is better to stock up on some euro cash or have a bank card. Exchange offices in banks work from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, however, the exchange rate is usually worse than in Moscow. There are no problems with ATMs - there are many of them. A ski pass can be purchased either at the tourist office (t. +33 0450 53 0024) or directly at the ski lifts.

Ski pass Chamonix Le Pass (from 1 to 13 days) gives you the opportunity to climb anywhere in the valley, except for Les Houches (Les Houches) and the second stage of the Grands Montets. The bus ride from Bossons to Tour is free of charge. For ski passes valid for 10 days or more, a photo is required.

The Mont-Blanc Unlimited ski pass gives you the opportunity to ski absolutely on any slopes, including the resorts of Les Houches, Courmayeur (Italy) - with a surcharge for a bus of 15 euros, Verbier (Switzerland) - with a surcharge for a bus of 24 euros, and Megeve (France) - no extra charge. Also, this ski pass allows you to use the buses in the valley for free and get a discount when traveling through the Mont Blanc tunnel (14 euros both ways). It makes sense to buy this ski pass for freeriders, as well as for those who want not to be limited to one ski area.

Price in high season: 62 euros for adults, 51 euros for children from 4 years old and seniors (from 65 years old). There are discounts for families with children. Chamonix ski pass price for 6 days: €299/€254.20 adults/children. Additional discounts apply to ski passes at the beginning of winter and spring, when buying online (at least 3 days before the start of skiing). For families with more than 1 child, it makes sense to buy the Chamonix Le Pass family ski pass, which allows the second and third child to ski at no extra charge.

History of Chamonix

The first inn opened in Chamonix in 1770 and was a harbinger of the tourist boom that swept the resort a little later. Chamonix became especially popular after the conquest of Mont Blanc in 1786. Everyone believed that the local mountain peaks were not at all as inaccessible as it seemed before. Romantic writers and journalists began to describe the mountains not as a formidable place full of terrible dangers, but as a preserved island of untouched nature. And not only desperate daredevils and adventurers rushed to Chamonix, but also quite respectable tourists. In 1816, the first hotel was built in Chamonix, and in the 1900s, three magnificent palace hotels appeared in the valley.

In 1821, the Compagnie des Guides, the oldest and largest association of mountain guides in the world, was founded. And in 1908, the first mountain (cog) railway Montenvers Mer de Glace was inaugurated, delivering tourists to the glacier. Today, this historic railway takes 20 minutes from the center of Chamonix to the foot of the Mer de Glace glacier, the largest in France - its length is 7 km and a thickness of 200 m. However, the turning point in the history of Chamonix was the construction of roads and convenient railway communication, which made the valley accessible to guests from all over Europe. Tourists from England, France and other countries began to come to Chamonix to look at Mont Blanc, walk in the mountains and breathe in the fresh mountain air. In 1866, during the reign of Napoleon III, the first horse-drawn carriages appeared on the village streets, and between St. Gervais Le Fayet (Saint-Gervais Le Fayet) and Chamonix a railway line was built. With the advent of trains, Chamonix became accessible not only in summer, opening up opportunities for winter sports and recreation. One of the popularizers of winter holidays in the Alps was Dr. Payot.

The first Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix in 1924, turning the valley into a fashionable and highly popular resort. In subsequent years, many lifts appeared on the surrounding slopes. The first were the Glacier Cable Car (now defunct) and Planpraz, then the lifts began to deliver tourists to Brevent, Aiguille du Midi and Flegere.

Today Chamonix is not only a popular tourist resort, but also an important transport point linking France and Italy thanks to the tunnel under Mont Blanc.

The Mont Blanc Tramway (also known as the TMB) is one of the last cog railways in the mountains of France. Together with the Montenvers train, it is the highest railway in Haute-Savoie. The railway rises very steeply into the mountains, so some sections, in addition to two ordinary rails, additionally have a third rail - a gear, and under the car there is a huge gear wheel, which, clinging to the gear rail, pulls the car uphill.

This rack railway goes up from Saint-Gervais, Le Fayet (Saint-Gervais, Le Fayet), through meadows and pastures and small mountain lakes, through Les Houches to Nid d "Aigle-Eagle's Nest (Nid d "Aigle" at an altitude of 2372m.

It is worth noting that the usual bus lines will not work to get to Le Fayet, or rather it will work out, but only in the summer and only a few times a day, but using a guest card you can get to Le Fayet by train for free.

The line is served by three vintage trains from 1957, painted in different colors: blue, red and green. Each train is named after the owner's daughter - Anna, Maria and Jeanne, the names are painted on the cars in gold letters.

If you just want to get to the start of the classic Mont Blanc climb route, then you should drive from Chamonix to the village of Les Houches, and from there take the Bellevue lift (1794m) up to transfer to the tram. This path will save you time, and for money, the Mont Blanc lift + tram from Bellevue station or the Mont Blanc tram from Le Fayet are almost the same. Well, for the economical ones, you can climb to the upper Bellevue station on foot, but then you should start early and check the tram schedule. Although all the way from the valley to the last tram station can be overcome on foot.

And if you just want to ride on this wonderful tram, then you should start from the very beginning. The trip lasts about an hour. Along the way, views of more and more peaks of the Mont Blanc massif open up.

Along the way, the tram stops 6 times and each of the six stops offers many opportunities to start walking routes: Saint-Gervais, 792m; Motivon, 1400m; Voza Pass 1653m, Bellevue 1794m, Mont Lache 2115m and Eagle's Nest 2380m to Bionassay Glacier.

The Mont Blanc tram also operates in winter, but it only goes to Bellevue station.

From the terminal station of the tram to Mont Blanc, the trail itself begins, to Mont Blanc itself. All who climb Mont Blanc along the classical route start their journey from here.

If you are planning a trip on the Mont Blanc tram, then you should look at the current schedule on the official website www.chamonix.com. But do not forget that the schedule is different for different times of the year, so you should look at the schedule table that is relevant for your dates.
But you can also climb Mont Blanc from the other side - along the route from the Cosmic shelter (or the route through the three peaks of Mont Blanc). This others
