About the city

The Mediterranean climate of Cambrils is characterized by a small annual temperature range. Cold wind and rain are rare. The beach season lasts five months - from May to September. The tourist peak, as in many other cities, coincides with the holiday season in July and August. However, in May and September the weather is more comfortable.

Cambrils is divided into the historic old town of Pueblo with medieval houses, the port area and the tourist area called Villa Fortuni. The majority of the city's 35 thousand residents live in the port area. The majority of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues are concentrated in the tourist area, which smoothly transitions into the neighboring resort of Salou. There are especially many of them on the embankment. However, overall Cambrils is less noisy than Salou.

The coastal strip of Cambrils stretches for 10 km. It has nine official beaches, characterized by fine, clean sand and a gentle slope into the sea. The longest (2 km) beach is Vilafortuny, considered the best. Almost all hotels and boarding houses have their own beach areas. Visiting the beaches is free. A fee applies for the use of beach equipment. As in other resorts, tourists can go diving, surfing, paragliding, yachting and even parachute jumping.

The city is considered the gastronomic center of the Costa Dorada. The most popular dishes are the marescada fish platter and paella (paella) with seafood. Pork sausages with olives, black rice and all kinds of baked goods are also common. Local cheeses, honey and homemade wines are famous. The city hosts food festivals in February and autumn.

Architectural monuments

The popular resort of Salou is 4 km from Cambrils and can be reached on foot, by taxi or by rented bicycle. Halfway between these cities there is a defensive castle from the 12th century. Castell de Vilafortuny. It is named after the noble Spanish family who founded the building. Nowadays, in the Vilafortuny Castle there is a popular restaurant of the same name, which welcomes visitors in three rooms - the Main Hall, the Marquis' Living Room and the Olive Living Room. The castle tower offers a beautiful panorama of Cambrils.

There is a small chapel at the castle where ceremonies are held - weddings, engagements, christenings. The castle and chapel are surrounded by a picturesque garden. The address of Vilafortuny Castle is Avinguda de Vilafortuny, opening hours are 10–14 and 16–20:30.

Not far from Vilafortuny Castle there is an active church, Iglesia de Santa Maria de Vilafortuny. The beginning of its construction dates back to the 15th century. After this, the church was rebuilt several times, the last time in the 18th century.

Parish church from the 12th century. Santuario de la Verge del Cami is located at Carrer Verge del Camí, 30 (200 m from the train station). In the 17th century The Church of the Virgin Mary del Cami was reconstructed in the Renaissance style. The name "Virgin Mary of the Way" comes from a legend according to which in 1205 Our Lady passed through Cambrils. Every year on September 8, as part of the Festa Major festival, city residents celebrate the day of the Virgin Mary del Cami. There is a small museum attached to the church, a ticket to which costs 1.5 EUR.

On the territory of the church, the Torre de la Ermita (Watchtower) attracts attention. It was built in the 14th century. for defensive purposes, and was well preserved both outside and inside. Now it houses an exhibition dedicated to medieval Cambrils.

Another interesting tower, the Torre del Puerto, can be seen in the center of the port, at Passeig Miramar, 31. Exhibits inside the Port Tower represent the maritime history of the city. Now the tower is one of the buildings of the Historical Museum.

Museums

The Museu d'Història de Cambrils is housed in several buildings. In addition to the already mentioned Watchtower and Port Tower, it includes two more exotic premises - an ancient mill and a wine cellar. Archaeological finds are displayed inside the mill. The exhibition in the cellar is dedicated to the development of local winemaking and olive production oils. The museum also houses the ruins of the Roman settlement of Vila Romana de La Llosa. The museum's opening hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 10-13:30 and 17-20:30, and on Sundays and holidays from 11-14 hours.

There is also an Emerald Museum in Cambrils. It presents these precious stones and products made from them. Some of them can be purchased. Visitors also get acquainted with the peculiarities of emerald mining. You can get to the museum by city buses No. 1–3.

Between Cambrils and Vinyols is El Parque Samá, founded at the end of the 19th century. Cuban Marquis Don Salvador Sama. He wanted the park to remind him of his native Cuban landscapes. The Marquis entrusted the realization of his dream to Jose Mestre, who created the Ciutadella Park in Barcelona. The result is a man-made attraction visited by almost all vacationers in the Costa Dorada.

Sama Park covers an area of 14 hectares. In its center is the mansion of the former owner with an adjacent pond and fountain. In front of the house, one and a half centuries old linden and chestnut trees, planted when the park was founded, have been preserved. The main alley leading to the mansion is bordered by tall plane trees, oak and tangerine trees. The lawn around the fountain is planted with exotic palm trees - Canarian date palms, Japanese fan palms and Washington thread palms. Many peacocks walk throughout the park, unafraid of people.

To the left of the mansion there is a large vase with beautiful flower arrangements. The cave-mimicking Corner Tower, located in the southeast corner, is built on a hill. Most tourists gather around the lake with a waterfall and a canal. The area of the lake is a whole hectare. It has three man-made islands connected by bridges. Their cement cladding looks like tree trunks. The leaves of the swamp cypress growing right in the lake change color throughout most of the year. Yellow in spring and green in summer, they turn bright red in autumn.

The address of the park is Carrertera de Vinyols s/n, opening hours are 10–20 (in low season – up to 18) hours. The ticket price of 4.7 EUR is negligible compared to the beauty that you can admire all day. Therefore, you can afford to travel a few kilometers to the park by taxi (14–15 EUR one way). You can also arrange a return trip with the driver. A more economical alternative is Plana regular buses on the route Cambrils - Reus, but not all of them, but only those going through the park. They depart from Cambrils bus station.
